Check Your Doctor's Record

It is important to check your doctor's record with The Medical Board of California.

Unfortunately, pressure by doctors' on the California Legislature means that much of the information you want to know about your doctor is limited.

But, per The Medical Board's website, this is what you can find out:

  • If a doctor has been disciplined or formally accused of wrongdoing.
  • If a doctor has been disciplined by a medical board of another state or by an agency of the federal government.
  • If a doctor has been convicted of a felony that was reported to the Board after Jan. 3, 1991.
  • If a doctor has been convicted of a misdemeanor after Jan. 1, 2007 that resulted in disciplinary action or an accusation that was filed by the Board and was not dismissed or withdrawn.
  • If a doctor received a citation for a minor violation of the law by the Board within the last five years.
  • Any hospital disciplinary actions that resulted in the termination or revocation of the doctor's privileges to practice at a hospital for a medical disciplinary cause or reason reported to the Board after Jan. 1, 1995.
  • After Jan. 1, 1998, all malpractice judgments and arbitration awards. Be aware that from Jan. 1, 1993 to Jan. 1, 1999, only judgments and awards greater than $30,000 were required to be reported to the Board.
  • After Jan. 1, 2003, medical malpractice settlements over $30,000 that meet the following criteria:
    • Four or more in a 10 year period - beginning Jan. 1, 2003 - if the doctor practices in a high-risk specialty such as obstetrics, orthopedic surgery, plastic surgery, and neurological surgery.
    • Three or more medical malpractice settlements in a 10 year period - beginning Jan. 1, 2003 - if the doctor practices in a low-risk specialty (all others).

Of course even this limited information is available only if it really is reported to The Medical Board.

Nevertheless, your doctor's record is always worth checking.
